Rio de Janeiro Lighthouse Tower
Arquitectum, the first international agency dedicated to organizing competitions around the globe, announced the Rio De Janeiro, City Tower Competition, in 2009. The project would be located in the bay of the city of Rio de Janeiro, comprising a vertical structure that would become a symbol for those arriving in Rio. The Lighthouse-Tower had to be sufficiently versatile to house multiple sporting and cultural events, as well as providing a space for recreation and serving as a huge lighthouse composed of multiple LED units located all the way from the highest part of the edifice, along, entire architectural structure, to the base. The graphic interpretation of a wave in close relation to the landscape of Rio de Janeiro, was the core principle of the project’s concept and design.
A synergy of forms and spaces, harmonically designed, to introduce a contentious play of paths from which one can observe the landscape of Rio, Copacabana bay and at the same time the horizon and the firmament. A landmark that will become an extension of Rio’s culture and everyday life. The skyline, the intense curving of the mountaintops, walking on the undulate side-walks of Copacabana beach, surfing, the infinite ocean waves.
A landmark inspired by the city of Rio, for the city of Rio.
